Hi.

Welcome to Hasty Book List—your cozy corner of the internet for all things bookish. Here, I share the stories I’m reading, the ones I can’t stop thinking about, and a few literary surprises along the way. I’m so glad you’re here.

Author Interview - Tim Kirk

Author of ALL HIS DAMNED MOTHER'S SONS

When Elvis Presley died on the US Army base where he was stationed in Friedberg, Germany in 1959, it changed the lives for four young men who would find themselves racing down a relentless path, from 1960 to 1973, towards a deadly collision.

Author I draw inspiration from:

Melville. Ahab and the Whale weren't in the first draft of Moby Dick. This arrives in my mind so often as I write. I have found essential elements far into my drafts and I have learned to wait for them to discover me.

Favorite place to read a book:

A park with my daughter.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Anyone but James Ellroy. I love his books and the persona he has created but, boy, can you imagine being in an elevator with him?! TRAPPED in an elevator with him?! No thanks!

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

Sitting in a treehouse with my 8-year-old friends for a "sleep-over", I was telling stories I had "all written down." I felt guilty in the morning when I couldn't remember enough to scribble the stuff I made up that night.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Audiobooks. They're like daydreams.

The last book I read:

Black Tunnel White Magic by Matthew McGough and Rick Jackson. The best Southern California psychopath villain ever and he's real! I have clinked a beer bottles in bars with guys like this while they smiled and fiddled the knife they had hidden in their Pumas.

Pen & paper or computer:

Both. First draft with pen on paper. Typing it all in on the computer is my second draft.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

I'm going to go with Horatio, because he's the best friend anyone could have. He'll stick by you with anything, and give you the best eulogy ever.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

A filmmaker. Which I am. As I writer and director, some of my credits are Sex Madness Revealed, The Miami Vice Incident, and the award-winning The Mystery of Durango. I've also produced some documentaries, three of which have premiered at Sundance, and one has screened for Director's Fortnight at Cannes. A few from the pack include Room 237, The Nightmare and The El Duce Tapes.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

Late 70s punk in LA, NY, London. Torn shirts, mainly.

Place I’d most like to travel:

I'm pretty content with California!

My signature drink:

Coffee. Black.

Favorite artist:

Joe Strummer. RIP.

Number one on my bucket list:

My bucket list is entirely all the time I can get to be part of my daughter's life. She is awesome. So is her mother.

Anything else you'd like to add:

I dedicated my book to my friend Josh Lawson. We lost him in 2020. There would be no ALL HIS DAMNED MOTHER'S SONS if there were no Josh Lawson. Josh was a unique man, truly one of a kind, a raconteur, filmmaker, actor, writer and the hardest working man I’ve ever known. At some point before I met him, Josh had written a screed of a screenplay about a washed-up country singer, a psycho and a woman-killer, who only sang Eddie Noack’s songs. We played with this character over the years, wondering what to do with him. Then one day, Josh went to the hospital with a backache and died a week later. I could never hope to write a character like Josh, but Billy Clover’s genes share some of his biological make-up. I wrote this book for him. I hope that you will read it with him in mind.
