Book Review - If The Creek Don't Rise by Leah Weiss

I read this book several months ago through the First to Read program, but I wasn't allowed to review it until now! It will be available for purchase in August 2017, but you can preorder your copy today.

If the Creek Don't Rise by Leah Weiss is about a small community that lives in the Appalachia. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character, starting and ending with Sadie Blue. Sadie is a young girl who got pregnant by and then later married the town bully. We hear from her grandmother, her aunt, the town preacher, the preacher's sister, a new-to-town teacher, Sadie's husband, and more.

Together, these characters are deeply human each with their own story to tell. I love how the author wove together each individual's story while telling the story of the community as a whole. The stories overlap and diverge in interesting and unpredictable ways. I love the author's ability to change our perspective of the story with a single line - she does this several times throughout the book.

The subject matter is dark and at times heartbreaking, there were several times I was ready to walk away from this book and not finish it. I did end up finishing it and I'm glad I did but I was still left with an overall sense of whew I'm glad I got through that.
