Book Review - My Journey by Donna Karan

Some of my favorite books are written by strong, creative women: this is one of those books. I selected this book to read with my student reading group. We were all inspired by her story, which sparked such great conversation during our meetings. In fact, we loved it so much we decided to finish it quicker than originally planned. My students just couldn't wait to see how it ended.

What I love about Donna Karan (and the fashion historian in me is really coming out here) is the way she transformed the working woman's wardrobe. In 1985 she presented her first solo collection after working for Ann Klein for 11 years. In this collection she introduced "Seven Easy Pieces" for the woman who needed an easy wardrobe that she can throw on and always look fabulous. Donna Karan's pieces weren't fussy or complicated, they didn't require a PhD in fashion or a body of a super model in order to pull off the look. Business of Fashion wrote a great piece on the History of Donna Karan's Seven Easy Pieces, if you're wanting to learn more.
