Book Review - Charity Bashed by Sharon Geltner

I started #HastyBookList as a hashtag to keep track of the books I read and to remember what each one was about and what I thought of them. It came as a pleasant surprise the first time someone mentioned using my list as a source to choose their next book, but I thought it was a fluke...perhaps a one-off...but flattering none the less. As my list grew, however, it became the thing people most mentioned when referring to my Instagram account. I had dozen of friends using it as a source to choose their next book, many would come up to me later and want to talk to me about the book they read off my list. These conversations and connections with people I know in real life as well as friends I've only met via social media that ultimately inspired and encouraged this website to form.

On top of that, back in 2011 I wrote a dissertation and for 6 years now I've been encouraged to turn that dissertation into a book. It is still a pipe dream...but writing a book does not come naturally to me. Writing a book is...scary? Overwhelming? Intimidating? Hard? All of the above. And more. So my dissertation is still sitting in the back of my computer hard-drive collecting dust. Waiting and hoping that someday it will become a book. So when Sharon Geltner contacted me on Instagram and asked me to review her book, I was more than willing.

Charity Bashed is the tabloid of mystery books - and funnily enough, it is about the murder of a tabloid tycoon (that is, a man who made his living publishing a tabloid and from those proceeds he was able to live an extravagant life in Palm Beach, FL.) The novel is told from the perspective of Justine Romanoff, a social worker who raises money by planning high-end philanthropic parties. Right before one of her big events, the tabloid tycoon who pledged 10 million dollars to her charity is found dead. Justine finds it difficult to let go of her investigative journalist past and takes it upon herself to look into who committed the crime. The book was entertaining in the same way tabloids are - full of outrageous stories and witty puns. But Sharon Geltner used to work in this world - so I can't help but wonder how much of this insane world is true!

Note: Although the author sent me this book at no charge in exchange for this review, the opinions expressed in this post are my own.
