Author of The Confidence Equation

The Confidence Equation is part memoir, part self-help. It shares my personal story living with cerebral palsy and how I overcome my disability to become a professional athlete (2x US Open gold medalist in table tennis), national stand-up comedy champion, and award-winning psychologist. I use my personal story to share life lessons on how readers can overcome self-doubt and build self-confidence through introspection.

Author I draw inspiration from:

I've drawn inspiration from a wide range of authors, including Susan Cain, John Kim, Mark Manson, Jillian Turecki, and Yuval Noah Harari, to name a few. I appreciate tones that range from punchy and irreverent to reflective and intellectual and try to incorporate them all into my own writing, in some way.

Favorite place to read a book:

My favorite place to read a book is on my couch, legs propped up and a pillow on my lap.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

I'd love to have a chat with Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series. I'd see if I can use my PhD in psychology to get him to reveal where his true loyalty lies. I don't think I'd succeed!

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

I've known I wanted to be an author since I was around 9 or 10 years old. I started blogging online under a pseudonym and writing for eHow and loved being able to help others. I set a dream of publishing my own book someday and here we are!

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Paperback all the way. Hardcover is beautiful and charming, but bulky and harder to maneuver flipping pages. Ebooks are cool, efficient, and versatile, but I'm staring at a screen all day for work so I like a screen detox when I read for leisure. Audiobooks are my close second favorite, since I do love podcasts and cooking with either an audiobook or podcast on. Paperback is my jam. It's soft, flippable, and gives me that minimalist screen-free feeling of immersion into an author's words.

The last book I read:

When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi. It was a beautiful story with a powerful message. The author's perspective and storytelling pulled me in and made the ride as enlightening as it was effortless.

Pen & paper or computer:

I always use a computer because, well, I'm a writer who's physically unable to actually write! With cerebral palsy, I can't really hold a pen and write much at all. So I type away.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

If I weren't an author, I’d be either a professor or a full-time professional table tennis player.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

The 2020s. At age 29, I'm finally figuring out how to dress like an adult, so the 2020s have been my peak era so far, on a personal level.

Place I’d most like to travel:

I'd love to visit Hawaii. I've never been. It's the only U.S. state that grows cacao, and I'm an avid craft chocolate aficionado, so that just about does it for me.

My signature drink:

A chai latte

Favorite artist:

My cousin, DUUNES (totally unbiased)

Number one on my bucket list:

I'd love to visit the UK someday.
