Author of MEANT TO BE

A luminous, transportive love story loosely based around the tragic relationship between John Kennedy, Jr., and Carolyn Bessette, one that provides both a beautiful evocation of 1990s-era New York City and a nuanced look at the viability of love under the glare of public scrutiny.

Author I draw inspiration from: She isn’t an author, but the single biggest influence in my writing career is my mother. A retired librarian, she instilled in me from a very early age a love for books and reading.

Favorite place to read a book: I can read just about anywhere, but ideally, I’d love to be in comfortable chair with great lighting (my eyes are getting old!) and a glass of good bourbon.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Jay Gatsby (The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald). Psychoanalyzing that man would be fascinating!

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I’ve always wanted to be an author, ever since I was a little girl. As mentioned above, I grew up with a strong love for books and writing, and actually wrote my first “book” when I was five years old.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardcover. I’m a traditionalist, and there’s nothing more satisfying than a crisp new hardcover (love that sound of the spine cracking when you open a new book!).

The last book I read: I’ve recently started an Instagram based book club (@egbookclub—please join us!) where I pick one book a month to read and discuss with my followers, all concluding with a live chat with the author. This past month’s selection was Adriana Trigiani’s excellent THE GOOD LEFT UNDONE.

Pen & paper or computer: Pen & paper for everything but writing my books!

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Bridget Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding).

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: A psychologist. I’m fascinated (both personally and professionally as an author) with trying to figure out what is going on in another’s head, and gaining some level of empathy—or at least understanding—for what is driving their actions.

Favorite decade in fashion history: 1990s! That’s part of the reason I wrote MEANT TO BE—to evoke that decade (and Carolyn Bessette’s effortless style).

Place I’d most like to travel: South Africa. I’ve been once before and can’t wait to return.

My signature drink: Palomas.

Favorite artist: My current obsessions are photographers Cig Harvey, Julie Blackmon, and Christy Bush!

Number one on my bucket list: Meet the Queen!
