Author Interview - Joe Hart

Author of I Become Her

A wife’s search for her husband’s true identity spirals into a nightmare of fear and paranoia in a twisting novel of psychological suspense by the Edgar Award–winning author of Or Else.

Only ten days into their marriage, Imogen and Lev Carmichael are on a honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean when Imogen suspects her husband of being unfaithful. Amid the recriminations, denials, and rage, Lev falls overboard into the water. It’s a miracle he’s found alive. And with no memory of what pushed him—and Imogen—over the edge.

Back home among family and friends, Imogen and Lev are finally starting to readjust. As terrified as Imogen is of Lev’s memories returning, it’s her suspicions of infidelity that get the best of her. Then, searching for clues, she discovers a woman from Lev’s past he never told her about…a woman who has been missing for years. More alarming is that Imogen soon has reason to believe that Lev remembers more than he’s letting on. But why would he lie?

The man Imogen loved, married, and trusted is a man she’s now beginning to fear. And she must decide how far she’s willing to go to uncover the truth.

Author I draw inspiration from:

Like so many other writers, Stephen King was truly formative for me as an author and he continues to inspire with his work.

Lisey's Story is my favorite of his books mostly because of how he truly gets inside a marriage and its secrets. Also I think it has the most heart of any of his books, and that's saying something.

Favorite place to read a book:

My recliner in front of my fireplace during a storm.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Olive Kitteridge- Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. I think Olive would have a lot to say about being stranded in an elevator with a stranger and most of it would be deeply entertaining, which would help the time pass.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

There was no one moment. It was more of a slow-burn longing for years and years. It took the better part of a decade before I found my way to writing professionally, but it was necessary for everything to work out the way it did.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

All of them have their appeal. A hardback is great to curl up with in a really comfortable setting like an easy chair or couch while a fire crackles. A paperback is a wonderful companion on a trip or while you're waiting on someone/something. Ebooks are great for reading in bed- so light and easy to hold. Audiobooks are perfect for road trips or while you're doing chores. There's nothing I dislike about any format of a story.

The last book I read:

Bad Dirt by Annie Proulx. Like all of her work, it was raw and captivating.

Pen & paper or computer:

90% computer, 10% writing tablet. I usually make an outline/notes on my writing tablet which has a stylus so it scratches that handwriting itch. The rest is all on my laptop with some notes written to myself on the last page of the manuscript so I don't forget anything.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Isaiah Coleridge (Blood Standard, Black Mountain, Worse Angels) by Laird Barron. Isaiah is a tough enforcer with the heart of a philosopher. He would be an excellent drinking buddy who you could have deep conversations with.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

Chef. Writing and cooking have a lot in common.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

90s of course. Can't go wrong with baggy jeans and flannels.

Place I’d most like to travel:

New Zealand. I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains!

My signature drink:

Alcoholic- Jack & Pepsi. Nonalcoholic- water.

Favorite artist:

Gregory Alan Isakov.

Number one on my bucket list:

Share a bottle of wine with my wife overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
