Author Interview - Jyoti Chand

Author of Fitting Indian: A Graphic Novel

All Nitasha’s parents want is for her to be the perfect Indian daughter—something she is decidedly not. Everything she does seems to disappoint them, especially her mom. They just don’t get that she’ll never be like her doctor older brother. To make matters worse, she’s never quite felt like she belongs at school either, and lately, her best friend, Ava, and her crush, Henry, seem to be more interested in the rich new girl than in her.

Alcohol takes the edge off, but when that doesn’t work, Nitasha turns to cutting. She can’t stop asking herself: Will she ever be enough for her friends or her family? Or even for herself?

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

First grade- I wrote a short story, and it felt magical to be able to do that.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

ALL OF THE ABOVE, please.

The last book I read:

Always you and me by Dani Atkins — it was a great rom com and the perfect lighthearted read with heavy moments.

Pen & paper or computer:

Computer, but I love journaling.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Simran from Well Behaved Indian Women by Saumya Dave. She’s thoughtful, creative, and deeply introspective. She gets what it’s like to straddle cultural expectations and personal dreams, and she’d be the kind of friend who listens without judgment, sends you poems at midnight, and reminds you that you don’t have to earn your worth.
