Author Interview - Kristan Higgins

Author of Good Luck with That, Life and Other Inconveniences, and Always the Last to Know.

I draw inspiration from: eavesdropping in restaurants. Seriously, everyone has a fascinating story.

Favorite place to read a book: On my front porch in the spring, summer and fall; under a dozen blankets in bed during the winter.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Professor Snape.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When my kids were little, I’d tell them stories in the car, and my husband said, “You should write some of these down.” That was it. I ended up writing adult fiction, but it occurred to me that maybe I had a writer’s brain and should give it a try.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Paperback. I still like to read paper, but I’m admittedly hard on my books. They go in my purse, the back of the car, a suitcase. I like to read when I eat, so there might be food stains. If I really love the book, I’ll buy another copy in hardcover to keep pristine.

The last book I read: AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TIME by K.M. Jackson

Pen & paper or computer: Computer. I can barely write a thank-you note without my hand cramping.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:  Ramona from the Beverly Cleary books. Or Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, but I suppose everyone picks her.

If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: pediatric surgeon. The clock is ticking on that one. I haven’t taken a science class since my junior year of high school.

Favorite decade in fashion history: 1950s.

Place I’d most like to travel: New Zealand.

My signature drink: Iced coffee for nonalcoholic beverages; elderflower vodka martini for adulting

Favorite artist: Bono

Number one on my bucket list: Swim with wild dolphins who approach me out of a sense of love and spiritual recognition. We frisk and frolic, and they protect me from sharks so I’m not even scared, and ultimately, they escort me back to the beach and make their squeaky goodbyes, capping an experience none of us will ever forget.

Anything else you'd like to add: I should probably stop thinking about swimming with dolphins so much.
