The Devil Wears Prada + Mean Girls + The Woman in the Window = #FashionVictim by Amina Akhtar. Part way through reading this book I thought to myself, what am I reading? At first I didn’t really like it - it was…a lot…to take in. The main character, Anya St. Clair, is a bit over the top. All of the characters are a bit over the top, to be honest. I don’t really know anyone like these girls, not as an adult. Maybe in high school? That’s where the Mean Girls reference comes in. But I’m getting ahead of myself, let me tell you the premise of the story.

Anya St. Clair has been dreaming of becoming part of the fashion world for awhile now. She knows all the key players, looks the part with her high-end wardrobe, and recently landed a dream job as fashion editor at La Vie where she sits one desk away from her idol, Sarah Taft. But when Sarah and Anya go up for the same promotion, Anya switches from trying to win Sarah’s friendship to trying to win Sarah’s life, and anyone else who gets in Anya’s way better beware. This is life or death.

Okay, so coming back to my thoughts on the book. I said at first I didn’t really like it. The story was dark but also illogical…and I didn’t really get where it was going. Once it clicked that this book was “absurdist humor” it grew on me a bit. I never really got absurdist humor, which is rooted in its illogical nature. I kept thinking, “This could never happen.” But that’s the point…that is what makes it funny. So my apologies to the author for just not being with it enough to get it at first. I think anyone who either loves absurdist humor or knows what they’re getting into before starting this book (this is when my refusal to read book reviews prior to picking up a book hurts me) will enjoy #FashionVictim.

This would make a good beach read or escape from life’s everyday woes. There are no heavy themes or deeper layers. It is all on the surface and all in good fun - much how most people perceive fashion (even if I happen to disagree…I am currently teaching Social Psychology of Dress so my head is in the deep layers and heavy themes of fashion.) So there you go. That’s what you need to know before picking up #FashionVictim by Amina Akhtar.
