Winter in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand was one of my Book of the Month selections in October. I actually chose three that month, this is the first of those three I was able to read and review. I brought it with me on my vacation to Cabo, Mexico. It was the perfect vacation read: grabbed my attention right away, quick and easy to read, and a page-turner. On vacation you want a book that you can get lost in, but doesn’t take too much time to read. You also want to enjoy the cocktails, the pool, and ocean views.

Winter in Paradise is actually the first book in a trilogy. It is about Irene Steele, a wife and mother who seems to be living the ideal midwestern life until her husband dies in a plane crash under mysterious circumstances. He was supposed to be away on business but he was found near the Virgin Islands. His family reunites in this paradise right after the New Year to try to piece together what happened - they soon discover Irene’s husband was living a secret double life. So like I said, it was a great beach read. Immediately we are drawn in to the mystery of his death and then find out about the second life. I love how the chapters focus on different characters and we see these characters come together as more of the puzzle is pieced together.

I read this book immediately following Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield - the two books could not have been more different. Where Once Upon a River is dark and mysterious and complex, Winter in Paradise is still mysterious, but a much more light and easy read. I really enjoyed this book for what it is, and I do plan on reading the next two books in this series. What I loved most about this book was the author’s note at the beginning about why she chose to base her book in the Virgin Islands. It is clear that Elin Hilderbrand holds this location close to her heart.
