By late September, autumn no longer feels like something waiting in the distance. You can see it beginning at the edges of the trees, where the first leaves have traded green for flashes of gold and rust. Mornings are cooler, evenings arrive earlier, and even the warm afternoons carry a different kind of light—softer, lower, more golden. You step outside and breathe a little deeper, catching that first unmistakable scent of fallen leaves and cool earth.

It makes you want to start a new book.

You begin rearranging your reading rituals almost without realizing it. The iced coffee that accompanied so many summer chapters gives way to something warm. You find yourself reaching for a sweater before heading outside or choosing the chair beside the window instead of the sunniest spot in the yard. Perhaps you light a candle for the first time in months and settle beneath a blanket as evening arrives, a new book waiting in your hands.

You open to the first page and pause for a moment. You know nothing yet about the people you're about to meet or the places you'll visit. The pages ahead are untouched, filled with possibilities, and that feels particularly appropriate at this moment in the year. The season is changing around you while another world is just beginning to take shape.

Soon, you're a few pages in. Outside, leaves rustle in the breeze and the last light of the day disappears a little earlier than you expect. You settle more deeply into your chair and turn another page.

This is the beginning of cozy reading season, and your next favorite story may be arriving at exactly the right moment. If you're ready for something new to accompany you into autumn, here are the new books publishing this week.

But now, a few years later, his career is spiraling downward. With each book doing worse than the last, he fears his status as a Boring White Dude is partly to blame. With his bank accounts dwindling, Mack has to find a way to make more money: his ex-wife wants to send their son to a private high school, and his current wife wants to have a baby. Mack begs his agent and editor to sing the praises of his new novel and do everything in their power to encourage his publisher's marketing team to make the book a bestseller. But as Pub Day for his fourth novel approaches―without the interviews and publicity he'd so hoped for―Mack knows his book is in trouble. And with it, his career and personal life. Growing more desperate, Mack concocts a risky and more-or-less unethical idea for a publicity stunt. His agent, Wallis Wallace, reluctantly goes along with it―after all, if it works, she stands to gain 15% of his windfall. And if it doesn't work, Mack is the one who will suffer the consequences of being ridiculed and cancelled. #AuthorLife is a satire about an author who gets the wrong sort of inspiration from his dying career―because publishing is a bloody hard business.

The Big Day: Saying I Do, Only to Discover I Didn't by Lisa Cheek

In THE BIG DAY: Saying I Do, Only To Discover I Didn’t (She Writes Press; September 22, 2026), Lisa Cheek takes us back to her wedding reception as she grapples with the reality that, despite waiting almost fifty years for a monumental event that people flew in from all over the world to witness, she wasn’t married after all. Was not getting the wedding license signed a sign? Suddenly, she was questioning… Was marriage what she really wanted?

To find the answer, Lisa reflects on her family history (thrice-divorced father and a load of stepfamily baggage, for starters) and her past relationships with men (none of which, other than an early intense one in college, lasted longer than six months). After The Musician (a classic heartbreaker), there was The Biologist (a charmless granola guy), The Actor (too much drama), The Magician (his best trick: disappearing), Rollerblading Dad (a big kid with a kid of his own, who broke Lisa’s heart), IT Guy (a stealth dog hater), The Gym Rat (a stickler for routine), and The Ghoster (who topped the magician by abruptly vanishing—three times).

For the Love of Money: Four Dizzying Decades of Riding the Merrill Lynch Bull

Starting off in a toxic West Palm Beach penny stock boiler room, James Patrick Rooney joins Merrill Lynch's "thundering herd" at the opening of arguably the most disruptive four decades in Wall Street history (1983 through 2017). As the nascent Information Age rapidly transforms his trade, what follows is an eye-opening, often enraging account of congressional and C-suite ineptitudes largely responsible for the decade-long "savings and loan crisis" and the irrational "new paradigm" economy, culminating in back-to-back periods of wealth destruction rivaled only by the Great Depression.

For the Love of Money-cynical at times, humorous at others-is as much a personal and spiritual growth parable as it is one man's dizzying romp on the Merrill Lynch bull, presenting aspirational tales of angels and heroes along with the wisdom of sages capable of guiding us toward an enduring sense of meaning and happiness. And it just may offer the inspirational spark so many desperately need during our precarious times.

Morocco by Norah Labiner

In this intricate tale, a woman untangles her enduring bond with an heiress who she is still trying to understand…

Chicago, the turn of the 21st century. Our narrator—always there and never entirely present—recounts her decades-long relationship with the heiress, Katherine Stern. Through the years since boarding school, she has seen Katherine as a daughter who wants for nothing but respect from her psychotherapist father, as a woman with a kind, but fortune-hunting fiancée, and as a mystery even more confounding than the gothic horror stories she evaluates from the slush pile at her job. Sometimes, despite their estrangement, she has even seen Katherine as a friend.

Inspired by the classic story Washington Square by Henry James, Norah Labiner reimagines the prolific tale. Moving through wintery Michigan avenue to the creeping mansions of the rich to the world of melodrama, ghosts, and girls. Morocco confronts the ambiguity of memory, the horrors of history, and what it means, or does not mean, to read a book and tell a story.

Crypto Island: A Memoir of Midlife Relocation to Puerto Rico, by Georgine Hodgkinson

For fans of Stephanie Land and Glennon Doyle, a debut memoir of a woman who dives into cryptocurrency trading after relocating to Puerto Rico midlife—and along the way transforms her past struggles with poverty and substance abuse into wisdom.

Georgine had built a life of careful control. As a wife, mother, and college professor, she minimized risk and played by the rules. Her attorney husband was successful, her four grown daughters were thriving, and her students knew that hard work and deadlines mattered. Having survived a turbulent adolescence marked by poverty and substance abuse, she believed in the safety of well-ordered environments.

Then the pandemic upended everything. When classrooms and offices closed, Georgine and her husband Mark relocated to Puerto Rico, where she discovered a flourishing—and often outrageous—cryptocurrency community. As she navigated the mysteries of crypto trading and uncovered the political complexities woven into the fabric of the beautiful Caribbean island she now called home, Georgine embarked on a journey that would shatter her orderly existence—and force her to revisit the dangerous youth that had shaped her complicated relationship with home, risk, and money.

A memoir about facing past mistakes and embracing second chances, Crypto Island reminds us that personal growth never stops, and that living authentically often demands both resilience and reinvention.

The Need by Megan Mostyn-Brown

Every family has its secrets. But in this electric, provocative, and dizzyingly fast-paced horror debut, some families have The Need.

The Need is a rare genetic disorder. Those who have it must consume human flesh or die. For some, The Need is power. For others, it is a curse.

Talia has been on the run with her two teenagers since the kids were babies, changing names and identities every time someone gets close to discovering her family's tragic secret. Sam is her son, tormented by The Need, unable to stop giving in to his darkest desires, much to his mother’s chagrin. Vera, a former supermodel and member of New York City’s elite Armstrong family, lives a life of luxury, haute couture, and eating people. Yes, unlike Talia, the Armstrongs secretly pride themselves on their genetic abnormality. But beneath Veraʼs opulent lifestyle is a woman whoʼs ruthlessly haunted by a mistake from her past. Over the following months, with the company of Wyatt’s dog, Hawk, SJ takes on a restoration job for the historic Osprey House in her hometown of Beaufort, South Carolina. There, she reconnects with family and finds new friends – a community determined to see her reclaim her life. Even signs from the natural world urge her forward. But not everyone wishes her well. Though trouble looms ahead, ever-watchful Wyatt is determined to see SJ happy once more.
