Author Interview - Shelley Nolden

Author of The Vines

“In the shadows of New York City’s North Brother Island stand the remains of a shuttered hospital and the haunting memories of quarantines and human experiments. The ruins conceal the scarred and beautiful Cora, imprisoned there by contagions and the doctors who torment her. When Finn, a young urban explorer, arrives on the island and glimpses the enigmatic woman through the foliage, intrigue turns to obsession as he seeks to uncover her past—and his own family's dark secrets.”

Author I draw inspiration from: Sarah Pekkanen and her co-author Greer Hendricks. They are masters of suspense and plotting ingenuity.

Favorite place to read a book: Long car, plane, or train rides. I love that feeling of losing myself in another world, only to be jolted back to reality by the fact that I've arrived at my destination.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: The Man in The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I would have a lot of questions for him, but I'd have to ask them quickly, as he'd probably have us out of there within minutes.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: After reading Riptide by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston straight through, without interruption, as a teenager. The ability to captivate a reader like that left me in awe.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Anything but an ebook. Both the physical bond that comes with holding a book while emotionally connecting to its characters and listening to a well-narrated audiobook are pure magic.

The last book I read: The Children's Blizzard, Melanie Benjamin

Pen & paper or computer: Computer for drafting, paper and a full color suite of pens for editing

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Virginia Reeve in Greer Macallister's The Arctic Fury. Virginia's grit, resilience, decisive leadership style, and compassion make her the perfect friend during these challenging times.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: Any profession that would land me a job at The Walt Disney Company. I admire the breathtaking creativity behind that brand and all the joy it brings children (and adults).

Favorite decade in fashion history: 1920's. I wish I could pull off that level of glam.

Place I’d most like to travel: The Galapagos, to see the wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin to develop his Theory of Evolution

My signature drink: Strawberry margarita, coupled with a beach vacation

Favorite artist: Ansel Adams

Number one on my bucket list: Visit the Dujiangyan Panda Base to cuddle with a baby panda bear

Anything else you'd like to add: Simply a HUGE thank you for including me in your program!
