Author Interview - Suzanne Nugent

Author I draw inspiration from: I’ve never met Brené Brown nor Elizabeth Gilbert, but each of them has given me many friendly pep talks at just the right moment while I was writing Brunch and Other Obligations.

Favorite place to read a book: On a plane.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Yikes, can I not be stuck in an elevator with anyone, ever? Okay, I’ll say Hermione Granger. Yes, Hermione would get us out of there. We could just use that time-bending gadget from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to go back to the moment we boarded a broken elevator and make better choices.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I was in the fifth grade and I wrote a poem that made my teacher cry.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I love audiobooks best of all, but if it’s something I will refer back to, then I’ll take a paperback.

The last book I read: Over the Top by Jonathan Van Ness. I love memoirs – especially ones that have a strong voice. I was inspired by JVN’s honesty, resilience, and humor.

Pen & paper or computer: Oh no! What version of hell am I in where I’d have to choose?! Am I trapped in the elevator again?

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Jo March.

If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Filmmaker. I don’t care what medium I’m working in, as long as I’m telling stories.

Favorite decade in fashion history: The 1970’s, specifically, Mary’s wardrobe on the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Give me the wrap dresses and tailored trench coats. A turtle neck, wide-legged pants, and a pendant necklace. I dig it. In every other decade, fashion-wise, I’m mostly just interested in the hats.

Place I’d most like to travel: Paris again… and again… and again

My signature drink: Decaf almond milk latte with cinnamon.

Favorite artist: My son.

Number one on my bucket list: Giraffe Manor. Have you heard of this? Um. You guys. Google it up right now. It’s a lovely luxury hotel in the middle of a giraffe sanctuary in Kenya. Picture it: You’re enjoying a well-appointed tea with your family in a beautiful manor house. The windows are open to let in the breeze. And all of a sudden, a giraffe just casually pokes his head through the window like “Hey, what’s up, I’m a giraffe.” Yeah, that’s a big bucket list moment for a tea-sippin’ giraffe-lovin’ gal who really appreciates swanky digs. It’s all the things.
