Author Interview - Michael Cowan

Author of John B. Peoples

Divorced and living in a converted garage, John Peoples thinks his difficulties are over when he wins half of a $40 million lottery jackpot. But his boss, Ed White, bought the winning ticket for the two of them and only Ed’s name is on the ticket. When White makes clear his intention to cut John out of the winnings and then disappears with the entire jackpot, John embarks on an effort to find White and right the wrong.

During his quest, John suffers a debilitating spine injury and struggles to heal physically and emotionally. Yet he continues pursuing White from Los Angeles to Paris to Marseille. Along the way, he tries navigating the legal system, meets a woman he believes he can only dream about, and eventually engages the help of organized crime. Ultimately, he is faced with the question of how far he is willing to go to retrieve and protect what is his.

John B. Peoples is more than the study of a character out to correct an injustice. It takes us on a powerful journey while examining loss, personal growth, and the everyday challenges of life in America today.

Favorite place to read a book:

On my couch with my feet up.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

When I decided I had something of value to share with others.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Hardbacks are more permanent and seem more important, but they are expensive and can take up a lot of space. Paperbacks are more portable and one feels that one can write on them. E-books are convenient for travel and probably less taxing on the environment, but there can be battery issues and there is something in our memories about being able to hug hardback or paperback books. Hugging an e-reader just isn't the same.

The last book I read:

La Jurée by Claire Jéhanno. It was an absorbing story about judgment and memory in the context of a murder trial in France. It was also an easy read.

Pen & paper or computer:

Pen and paper for notes, although I do transfer those notes to a computer file. But most wriitng is directly on my computer.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Jim from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He is a solid guy with good morals who cares about his friends.

Singer/songwriter.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

The 60s, of course.

Place I’d most like to travel:

France, because I love practically everything French - the food, the art, the people - and I am functionally fluent in French.

My signature drink:

Wine of course.

Favorite artist:

Picasso.

Number one on my bucket list:

Pickleball, although I have heard it is addictive.
