Author of Ada Holloway’s Had Enough

Ada Holloway just needs to survive her final semester as a high school senior, but nothing's going her way.

Star quarterback Beckett Forsythe relies on Ada to do his homework for him, her rebellious cousin Molly has nowhere else to go but the Holloway's house, and to top it all off, Ada doesn't really know what she wants to do with her life—even though her parents already decided for her.

The one thing she does know is the topic for her senior essay: the life of Freeport's founder, Everett J. Washington. But the Mayor of Freeport has pulled Washington's biography from library shelves among a massive book ban. Ada needs that book, she needs to write her essay, and her best friend David has a perfect idea: a banned book club run by the public library. What could go wrong?

Author Interview - Mary Camarillo

Author I draw inspiration from:

I’ve always been a huge fan of Victoria Aveyard and Holly Black. The Red Queen and Folk of the Air Series got me into fantasy, which is absolutely my favorite genre. They both write compelling characters that are also flawed, and I would love to emulate that balance and careful attention in my own writing.

Favorite place to read a book:

I almost exclusively read in bed where I can take an impromptu nap a few chapters in.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Ideally I’d like to be stuck with someone who could rescue me because this is a nightmare scenario. I don’t know why, but I feel like trusting Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is the way to go. He’s smart enough for this, right?

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

It took until my agent sent me the email offering to represent my debut novel for me to realize that I wanted to be an author. It wasn’t on my radar until it was suddenly possible, but I haven’t looked back since. Best job ever!

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

I will always and forever love hardback books the most just because they’re durable and look nice on a bookshelf. I probably read ebooks more, though, just for the convenience. And I really struggle paying attention to audiobooks. My mind wanders way too much!

The last book I read:

I just finished A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’m absolutely obsessed with these characters, this world, and the story woven throughout. Armentrout sure knows how to start a series!

Pen & paper or computer:

A lot of my ideas start on pen and paper, but the moment my hand hurts, I’m done. Computer all the way! I use Scrivener to keep everything organized—best purchase ever!—and I’m usually good at getting 3,000-5,000 words a week when I’m not also juggling marketing tasks for ADA HOLLOWAY.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

I am 100% convinced I would be best friends with Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. She says aloud most of the things I think, so I can totally see us being a regency dynamic duo to rule them all.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

I got my Bachelor of Arts in Publishing from Belmont University, and my original goal was to be an editor or work in the production part of the publishing process. I still think that would be a very fun job!

Favorite decade in fashion history:

Anything with long, elaborate dresses. The more fairy tale-like, the better.

Place I’d most like to travel:

I’d really like to travel everywhere, if I’m being honest, but my current obsession is Greece. I’m told nothing beats a cruise through the Greek islands, and I’m also a really big fan of pre-1800’s history. I’d love to see old ruins and cities that have existed for longer than my mind can process.

My signature drink:

I can be bribed into doing just about anything with a strawberry lemonade from Wendy’s. Seriously.

Favorite artist:

Florence + the Machine is my favorite everything hands down.

Number one on my bucket list:

I desperately want to see the northern lights. The few times they’ve made it down to my corner of the world, I wasn’t able to see much, and it only makes me want to travel north and make my own magic.
