Author Interview - Nicole Trope
Author of THE STAY AT HOME MOTHER
Andrea is new to the neighbourhood, pregnant with her second child and dealing with a lot. Gabby lives across the street and has a seemingly perfect life. Their friendship develops quickly but each of these women are hiding something and when a child disappears, everyone's secrets are exposed.
Her chest tightens, her heart speeding up. The kitchen is chaos. She steps on
something hard and looks down. Toy dinosaurs are scattered everywhere. But
her son is nowhere--her baby boy is gone.
The police arrive. She can’t look at her husband. Instead, she studies the network of
lines on her shaking hands.
Then her phone beeps with a voice message. ‘Listen to it on speaker,’ says the
detective.
A woman’s voice fills the air.
‘I’m assuming this is the Andrea Gately listed as a contact on the Missing Children of
the World website. I’m calling to let you know that I’ve given your details to the police.
Why are you using a picture of my son on a missing children’s website? Why are you
using it and where did you get it?’

Author I draw inspiration from:
Alice Hoffman, Terry Pratchett, Fay Weldon, Ann Patchett-I will read anything these authors write or have written. But I am a fan of all books, depending on the mood I'm in. I read all genres, from Romance to Detective fiction and everything in between. Sometimes I need a cosy romance and sometimes, I'm in the mood for murder.

Favorite place to read a book:
The bath. Nothing better than a hot bath, a glass of red wine and a good book.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
Granny Weatherwax from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I imagine she would have an answer for every question I have about life. I've been a fan of the Discworld series for a very long time and I find that whenever I am going through a particularly hard time in my life, rereading the novels is a great comfort.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
I was twelve years old when I wrote a creative essay about a survivor of the Holocaust meeting a young criminal on a park bench. The teacher loved the story and I knew that I wanted to be the one to tell stories. I have always been a reader and I could not imagine a better job than this one.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
I read both eBook and paperbacks and like them both.
The last book I read:
Little plum by Laura McPhee-Browne. I love the characterisation of Coral who is single and pregnant in her late twenties. The writing is beautifully descriptive.

Pen & paper or computer:
Both. I use my computer for constructing the novel but notebooks are filled with thoughts I have that I want to include and things about characters that I want to remember. I also leave notes around the house as soon as something occurs to me. There are bits of paper everywhere.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with:
Elizabeth Best from The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. I think she would be a lot of fun. She would make sure I left the house to have an adventure and I need a friend like that.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
I was a High School teacher. I wanted to be an actress.
Favorite decade in fashion history:
I'm in my slouch era. I work from home and live in comfortable clothes.
Place I’d most like to travel:
I'd like to see the Northern Lights in Alaska. I think it would put my little world into perspective and we all need a little bit of perspective sometimes.
My signature drink:
A Negroni.
Favorite artist:
I love country music but don't have a particular favourite. I like Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll, Lady A and many others.
Number one on my bucket list:
A tour of all the castles in every Jane Austen movie and television series with my daughter, who has a degree in Ancient History and Archeology. I'm hoping to do it in the Summer of 2027.
Anything else you'd like to add:
I love hearing from readers on my social media accounts.
