Books Publishing this Week [August 3 - 9]

It’s a warm morning in early August, the kind that feels like the world is already awake and humming before you’ve even had your first sip of coffee. The sun is rising quickly, painting the buildings in shades of pale gold and soft shadow, and the air is already warm on your skin as you make your way down the street. You can hear the city starting up around you—the distant rumble of a bus, the flutter of pigeons taking flight, the quiet hum of conversation spilling from open doors.

You’ve chosen this morning carefully. You have no meetings, no errands that can’t wait. You step into your favorite café, greeted by the gentle jingle of the door and the cool relief of the air conditioning. The place is busy enough to feel alive but not so crowded that you can’t find a perfect spot—a small table by the window, with a view of the street outside, shaded by a striped awning.

You set your tote bag down and pull out the book you’ve been waiting to start. Its cover catches the light, bright and inviting, and you can’t help but smile as you run your fingers over it. It feels like a small promise you’re making to yourself—to sit here for as long as you like, to give the story your full attention, to simply be.

You order your drink—a cappuccino, maybe, with a thick layer of foam sprinkled with cinnamon. Or perhaps something cold and refreshing, an iced latte beading sweat on the glass. When it arrives, you wrap your fingers around it, savoring the weight and the smell before taking that first perfect sip.

Outside the window, the city moves at its own pace. A cyclist glides past, hair lifting in the breeze. A dog trots along on a leash, tongue lolling, its owner smiling down at it. A group of friends sits at another table outside, laughing over pastries, their voices low and happy. But all of that becomes background music as you open the book and begin to read.

The words meet you gently, and you’re pulled in easily, as if the author was waiting for you here all along. The café fades slightly as the new world rises up around you. The hum of conversation, the clatter of mugs behind the counter, the quiet indie music playing from the speakers all blend into the perfect soundtrack for reading.

You turn another page, settling back in your chair. The story is starting to gather momentum now—characters introducing themselves in slow, careful detail, the plot offering you small hints of where it might go. You pause every so often to take another sip of your drink, the bitterness balanced by a touch of sweetness, waking you up just enough to appreciate every word.

At one point, you look up from the page, smiling to yourself. The café is still busy, people coming and going, but you feel cocooned in your own little moment. The barista catches your eye and gives you a friendly nod before going back to work. A breeze drifts in through the open door, ruffling the edge of your page, carrying the scent of fresh bread and roasted coffee beans.

You shift in your seat, getting comfortable, determined not to rush. This is what mornings in August are for, you think. Letting time stretch out. Letting a good story take root. Being present in a way that feels rare and valuable.

You read on until your drink is nearly gone and the café has grown busier with late-morning customers. Eventually, you’ll close the book, tucking it back into your bag with a promise to return to it soon. But for now, you let yourself have this—one slow, golden morning, a perfect cup of coffee, and the beginning of something new, right there on the page.

The Art of a Lie by Laura Shepherd-Robinson

In 18th-century England, a widowed confectioner is drawn into a web of love, betrayal, and intrigue and a battle of wits in this masterful historical novel from the author of the “delicious puzzle-box of a novel” (The New York Times) and USA TODAY bestseller The Square of Sevens.

Following the murder of her husband in what looks like a violent street robbery, Hannah Cole is struggling to keep her head above water. Her confectionary shop on Piccadilly is barely turning a profit, her suppliers conspiring to put her out of business because they don’t like women in trade. Henry Fielding, the famous author-turned-magistrate, is threatening to confiscate the money in her husband’s bank account because he believes it might have been illicitly acquired. And even those who claim to be Hannah’s friends have darker intent.

Only William Devereux seems different. A friend of her late husband, Devereux helps Hannah unravel some of the mysteries surrounding his death. He also tells her about an Italian delicacy called iced cream, an innovation she is convinced will transform the fortunes of her shop. But their friendship opens Hannah to speculation and gossip and draws Henry Fielding’s attention her way, locking her into a battle of wits more devastating than anything she can imagine.

Knocking on Windows by Jeannine Atkins

Acclaimed author Jeannine Atkins revisits her past in this brave and powerful memoir-in-verse about memory, healing, and finding her voice as a writer, perfect for fans of Amber Smith and Speak.

Night darkens the window to mirror.
I’m back in my old bedroom.

Six weeks after the start of her freshman year of college, Jeannine Atkins finds herself back in her childhood bedroom after an unimaginable trauma. Now home in Massachusetts, she’s struggling to reclaim her life and her voice. Seeking comfort in the words of women, she turns to the lives and stories of Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelou, and Emily Dickinson. Through raw and poignant letter-poems addressed to these literary giants, Jeannine finds that the process of writing and reflecting has become not only a means of survival but the catalyst for a burgeoning writing career.

Inspired and ready to move forward, she enrolls in her state university, where she feeds her growing passion for writing in fiction seminars. But she finds that she’s unable to escape the pervasive misogyny of her classmates and professors, who challenge her to assert her own voice against a backdrop of disbelief and minimalization. This time, though, Jeannine is not willing to go down without a fight.

A searingly honest memoir told through gorgeous verse, Knocking on Windows stands as a beacon of hope and a celebration of the enduring spirit of survivors of sexual assault—and of writers.

Some Recollections of St. Ives by David Mamet

From the acclaimed playwright and author of Glengarry Glen Ross and American Buffalo comes Some Recollections of St. Ives, a masterful novel that masquerades as a memoir of the fictional Charles Hollis, a man whose life spanned continents, conflicts, and a decades-long career at one of America’s most storied institutions—the St. Ives School.

Written in the final years of Hollis’s life, Some Recollections of St. Ives offers a candid yet poignant reflection on his forty years at the school. Through the allegorical tales woven into Hollis’s recollections, Mamet delivers a sharp, incisive examination of an isolated institution and, by extension, society as a whole.

Once again, Mamet proves himself a master of language, balancing history’s weight on our culture with profound emotional depth. With wit and keen insight, he explores the complexities of human nature and the undercurrents of an American institution.

The Cover Girl by Amy Rossi

Author Interview with Amy Rossi

"Thrilling and glamorous as its runways and backstage parties, The Cover Girl is also heartbreaking and redemptive with an ending that made me cry. Birdie is a singular, unforgettable character whose story encapsulates so much of what led up to the #MeToo movement, and why the movement was so necessary."
—Ana Reyes, New York Times bestselling author of The House in the Pines

Find them early enough, and they will always be her girls.

Birdie Rhodes was only thirteen when legendary modeling agent Harriet Goldman discovered her in a department store and transformed her into one of Harriet’s Girls. What followed felt like the start of something incredible, a chance for shy Birdie to express herself in front of the camera. But two years later, she meets a thirty-one-year-old rock star, and her teenage heart falls hard as he leads her into a new life, despite Harriet's warnings. Then, as abruptly as it began, it’s over, like a lipstick-smeared fever dream. Birdie tries hard to forget that time—starting over in Paris, in the dying embers of the LA punk scene, in Boston at the height of the AIDS crisis. She’s not that person anymore. At least, that’s what she’s been telling herself.

Decades later, Birdie lives a quiet life. She works modest gigs, takes Pilates and mostly keeps to herself. Maybe it’s not the glamor she once envisioned, but it’s peaceful. Comfortable. Then a letter arrives, inviting Birdie to celebrate Harriet’s fifty-year career. Except Birdie hasn’t spoken to her in nearly thirty years—with good reason.

Almost famous, almost destroyed, Birdie can only make her own future if she reckons with her past—the fame, the trauma, the opportunities she gave up for a man who brought her into a life she wasn't ready for. Just like she’s not ready now. But the painful truth waits for nobody. Not even Birdie Rhodes.

For fans of My Dark Vanessa and Taylor Jenkins Reid, this striking debut novel explores the dizzying fallout of being seen and not heard in a high-stakes industry that leaves no silhouette unscathed.

Even if it means sharing what she dubs the quaint little murder cottage with Wyatt.

Begrudgingly, Josie starts to see a little more of the man behind the grumpy exterior. And when she finds out he was supposed to sail the Intracoastal Waterway south to Savannah scattering his uncle's ashes, Josie surprises even herself by offering to be Wyatt's first mate.

Smooth sailing is nowhere to be found, and Josie begins to wonder if they'll be able to make it home without killing--or kissing?--each other.

And yet, the longer they share cramped quarters and canned food, the more of Wyatt's layers she peels back until Josie realizes she misunderstood him, their shared history, and perhaps herself as well.

Accomplice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

Once Upon a Time meets The Office in Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s laugh-out-loud viral TikTok series turned novel, about the sunshine assistant to an Evil Villain…and their unexpected romance.

REWARD OFFERED: Apprentice to The Villain wanted for treason (light), magical property damage (alleged), and one incident involving a weaponized scone (accurate). Frequently seen with a grumpy frog (crowned, judgmental). Answers to “Evie” or “Stop that.”

Evie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings,” and the next, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem, murder plots, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding, sharp-jawed, walking disaster of a boss.

Now, with a magical prophecy unraveling, assassins showing up in the break room, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire―or her dignity, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread.

Being evil-adjacent was never part of the five-year plan. But then again…neither was falling for The Villain.

A magical office comedy with grumpy bosses, snarky frogs, and definitely-not-feelings.
