Authors LOVE their independent bookstores! I was blown away by the response I received when I reached out to a few of my favorite authors to give shoutouts to their favorite bookstores. Immediately I had authors emailing me that they couldn’t possibly choose just one, so you’ll see many authors listed two or even ten of their favorite bookstores. This year has been especially tough on our local bookstores (due to COVID) so I wanted to give them a little extra love on this holiday just for them.

Happy Independent Bookstore Day!

Too many to name!

New Dominion Bookshop

Author Interview with Donna Lucey.

Donna Lucey

It is a physically beautiful, peaceful space; it has an extremely knowledgeable, helpful staff who are eager to offer recommendations—and every suggestion they have ever made to me has been spot on. They know their customers and what they would like. The lofty space leads to a beautiful back garden. What's not to love? It is the perfect bookstore, as far as I'm concerned.

Books and Books, Coral Gables Florida

Author Interview with Katrin Schumann.

Katrin Schumann

I adore inner courtyards, and this bookstore has a lovely one surrounded on all sides by rooms filled with books and magazines. There is plentiful natural light, Spanish tile, gleaming wooden floors, and books galore. The staff are super well-informed and they have an excellent selection of books. Not to mention that you can go there for a delicious lunch under the umbrella or even a glass of wine before a reading. My favorite place to spend a few hours browsing and buying!

Cover to Cover is the coziest bookstore I've ever been in. It's covered in beautiful children's book artwork and always has the loveliest displays. But the best part of Cover to Cover is the booksellers! They're so knowledgeable, friendly, and great with kids, and they always have the best book recommendations. It's so wonderful to shop at a store that really understands how magical, transformative, and vital children's books can be.

I love this bookstore for so many reasons. The owner's excitement for books is palpable. Nadege loves talking about what's new, what's coming and old favorites. The store smells great! That might sound weird, but I love the smell of paper and books, and there's a coffee bar that adds to the aromatic vibe! The Book House supports local authors and artists (there's an art gallery downstairs) and there are tons of great events on the calendar. It's a store that's a vital part of the community.

Murder on the Beach Mystery Bookstore

Author Interview with Charles Todd.

Authors for Independent Bookstores - Hasty Book List - Independent Bookstore Day 2020

Charles Todd

Murder on the Beach in Delray Beach, Florida is not just a bookstore. It is in fact a multifaceted mystery bookstore. Yes, like many bookstores they have author book signings and special sales. Murder on the Beach is a place for the writing community. The Florida Authors Academy offers classes presented by a faculty comprised of the finest authors in the nation. Not just for the mystery writer the Authors Academy fosters tomorrow’s authors, and todays writers working to hone their craft. Several author groups hold their meetings in the store as well as several book clubs. Having an event or conference? Chances are Murder on the Beach will be there with a complete selection of the author’s titles. Let’s not forget their famous or infamous Monday before Halloween Party! Ghosts and gules from all over the state and country eagerly attend. These great accomplishments are the result of the Manager Joanne Sinchuk’s dedication to the community and the wonderful staff she employs. If you need help, have a question, need a speaker about the inside details of book selling Joanne and her staff are the people to call!

Queen Anne Book Company and Elliott Bay Book Company, both in Seattle, WA

Author Interview with Laurie Frankel.

Authors for Independent Bookstores - Hasty Book List - Independent Bookstore Day 2020

Laurie Frankel

I am so lucky to live walking distance from Queen Anne Book Company, the perfect community bookstore. The booksellers who work there are always warm and welcoming and have the best recommendations. The store is big enough to have everything you came in for, plus several other titles you didn't come in for but now absolutely have to have, but small enough to be sweet and homey and browsable. During the pandemic, they've not only been shipping books, not only letting you pick them up curbside, but also delivering them themselves to quarantined readers. They're a great little bookstore my neighborhood is so lucky to have.

Everyone who sets foot in Elliott Bay Book Company loves it instantly. It is large and sprawling enough that you can get lost among books -- the very best way to be lost -- with plenty of seats and tables and nooks and corners. It smells of wood and books and coffee and browned butter -- maybe the greatest combination of smells anywhere -- and has not just titles but entire sections you didn't know you needed but absolutely do. And they put on the loveliest readings and events. I've been so grateful that they've continued not only shipping but also online author events during this very hard and strange time.

Going here is adventure! The downtown vibe. Literal tunnels of books. Endless genres. The funky old book/new book smells. People watching. The random, secret books finds. Hours spent and lost here are never a waste.

The Village Bookstore is such a warm and inviting place. It has been around since I moved to Westchester but the new owner, Jennifer Kohn, has been particularly innovative and a wonderful support for authors and readers. I also love Scattered Books, the store in my hometown. It is a special space, and particularly lovely for young families, especially because there are bunnies in residence!

Shavers’s has been in Savannah’s downtown historic district for 45 years. It’s the quintessential bookstore, complete with creaky wooden floors, a maze of rooms with the best curated collection of fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles, and a great selection of titles of local and regional interest—plus a trio of of resident bookstore cats, Bartley, Mr. Eliot and Skimbleshanks. Owners Jessica Osborne and Melissa Taylor have become a vital part of Savannah’s literary and cultural community.

Split Rock Books, Cold Spring, NY

Author Interview with Lauren Willig.

Authors for Independent Bookstores - Hasty Book List - Independent Bookstore Day 2020

Lauren Willig

There are so many independent bookstores I adore: The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, AZ, where I always come away with more books than I can carry because Barbara Peters is a genius at book recommendations, Murder by the Book in Houston, Shakespeare & Co in New York, FoxTale in Atlanta... but Split Rock Books has a special place in my heart because they ended a decade's long bookstore drought in my own little Hudson Valley town. They immediately did what the very best independent bookstores do-- they provided not only reading material but also community, from weekly children's events to books clubs, showcasing all the best local talent has to offer. Long may they continue to sell from their adorable blue shop on Main Street! So please go there and buy lots of books. Or, during pandemic times, go to their website and order lots of books. If you order mine from them, you can get them signed! I'll even write whatever you like in them.... (Within reason. And good taste.)

Galignani remains a favorite because it feels temple-like and is run by the marvelous and incomparable Danielle Cillien Sabatier. First and foremost, she is a true friend to writers. And she organizes interesting events that illustrate her respect for the written word. Danielle's bountiful attitude is infectious and deeply appreciated by the most discerning Parisians. Galignani is large with soaring ceilings, it is one of the most bold and beautiful looking bookstores yet possesses a true soul. Entering the place, immediately calms. It's a haven for those who like to read, buy and or browse. The choice of both French and Anglo-Saxon books is exceptional.

MacLean's is a must-visit bookshop for anyone passing through the beachy city of Newcastle, NSW, Australia! This award-winning, independent bookstore is not only bursting with 'gotta-have-that' books that are gorgeously displayed, but the owners Amanda and Max Shirley are hugely active in supporting local writers. I could poke around this gem of a bookstore for hours on end.

These are my two neighborhood bookstores, and both have wonderful booksellers who put books I wouldn't necessarily find myself in my hands -- almost always with great results. They host me and other authors in events, which is a labor of love but always so much fun, such a great opportunity to connect with readers and with other authors. And I feel at home whenever I enter either of these lovely stores, which I can walk or bike to. What's not to love?

The BEST book selection in an adorable store, with the BEST customer service. It is so fun to wander the stacks for all things literary! They are a great partner with the Arts Center in Manzanita, Oregon, and are so supportive of authors. A wonderful store in a wonderful beach town.

In Cincinnati, we're beyond lucky to have JBB as our premier local book-lovers' hub. They have thoughtful, knowledgeable staff bursting with recommendations, a wonderful children's section big enough to be a store all its own, and (in non-pandemic times) a diverse and robust lineup of well-attended author talks. They're also a top sponsor of ticketed literary events off-site, and help make our region's annual Books by the Banks Festival possible. Jo-Beth is in good company: I'd be remiss not to mention the Mercantile Library downtown, the Bookshelf in Maderia, and Covington's Roebling Point keeping our reading community vibrant. But for so many of my favorite opportunities to connect with local readers and fellow authors alike, I have Jo-Beth to thank. And while these events are on hold, they're serving the local community by making curbside pickup and delivery simple.

In Litchfield County, Connecticut, there's a lovely town called Kent where you will find my favorite bookstore. It's a truly beautiful shop with kind, smart booksellers who are always happy to recommend a new read or simply allow you to browse the shelves. They host terrific events and are exceedingly generous in supporting local authors.

Main Point Books has been welcoming to me ever since I moved to Pennsylvania two years ago. The people who work there, especially the owner, Cathy, are warm and friendly and go out of their way to provide books their customers want. Always familiar with the latest releases, they write great personal reviews that are posted with books on the shelves. They’re very supportive of authors; their calendar is filled with book launches and signings. Once a month they provide space for my writers’ group to meet. Most of all, Main Point Books is my favorite bookstore because I feel good when I go there.

I first visited Sleuth of Baker Street, Toronto’s mystery-specialty bookstore, in 2012, when I was in desperate need of a mystery along the lines of Dorothy L. Sayers. I was impressed by the quality of recommendations and knowledge of the genre that the owners have. I left the store with a bag full of books and a list of new authors to discover, and it’s still one of my favourite shops to browse when I need to restock my TBR pile. Sleuth of Baker Street in Toronto, Canada has been “selling crime since ’79”. The store’s monthly newsletter, titled The Merchant of Menace, is filled with book reviews that are sure to entice readers to the shop. The store also has a great collection of autographed books available for purchase. Sleuth of Baker Street is a must visit for crime fiction fans and mystery addicts.

Portland has soooo many amazing bookstores - Broadway Books, Annie Bloom's - but Powell's Books just swallows you whole. The people working there are serious book lovers who thoughtfully curate different pullout areas (local authors!). It is a little city, nearly 70,000 square feet with nine color-coded rooms and over 3,500 different sections - no, seriously. Plan to spend the whole day there - luckily they have great coffee and tea to keep you going....... or order on-line!

I discovered Terrace Books as a tourist, in December 2019. It was cold out, my feet were wrecked from days of sightseeing and so, when I stumbled across the store, it couldn't have been at a more perfect moment. It has the perfect blend of a calm atmosphere, friendly booksellers and a brilliantly curated array of reads - new and old.

That was my first visit, but it certainly won't be my last.

Long before I published my first novel, I spent many evenings at Book Passage, perusing "how-to-write-a-book" books and attending author events. Eventually, I started bringing my laptop to their cafe to write for hours on weekends. I never finished that terrible first-ever manuscript, but I always completed the job of eating their delicious cookies. As a writer, Book Passage gave me a place to work on my craft, soak up some inspiration, and daydream: "someday, I'll be a published author."

Flyleaf is the perfect example of everything I love about an indy bookstore -- they've got great, knowledgeable staff; a wonderful, well-curated collection of new and used books; and they're active members of the community, having partnered with the public library to provide summer reading prizes for kids and on numerous exciting author events. They've also been working insanely hard during COVID to continue bringing great books and virtual events to the community. They're the best.

FoxTale is an amazing friend and supporter of authors at every stage in their career. They put me on the map by handselling my books, and champion new and established authors. They're an asset to their community by welcoming authors from around the country and across every genre and introduce them to new readers. I could not complete my Christmas shopping list without a phone call to FoxTale to help with book selections for my nephew and nieces. They are the epitome of the corner bookstore!

The Book Partners on Natucket Island actually run TWO stores--Mitchell's Book Corner and Nantucket Bookworks. They deftly answer to two different groups of ardent readers: the thousands of tourists who visit the island yearly, looking for all kinds of books on Nantucket, its history, and culture; and year-round residents who want the latest hot reads from what's jokingly called "America." The two groups often overlap in their tastes, of course, but add to this a broad section of engaging books, toys, and activities for children, and the Book Partners touch the lives of almost everyone who steps on Nantucket's shores. Plus, they support authors with great events, virtual interviews, the promotion of signed copies, and the sponsorship of the Nantucket Book Festival--an annual celebration of the word.

FoxTale Book Shoppe

Authors for Independent Bookstores - Hasty Book List - Independent Bookstore Day 2020

Jenny Milchman

First of all, I have to say that it was nearly impossible to pick just one! But Fox Tale takes it for two reasons. 1) Fox Tale hits both ends of what today's bookstore needs to be, the virtual and the bricks n' mortar. They are both heck at events--for one with a mystery author, they brought a real live (dead?) COFFIN into the store and you could lie down in it and get your pic taken for social! At another they had a dog who matched the one in the book. OK, the dog was stuffed. But huge! Fox Tale is also online about as much as they are in-person. Each week they post a What's Selling Tweet, shouting out authors whose books are doing well. One recent writer said she'd dreamed of being in Fox Tale's Twitter stream for years before getting published--so they literally make dreams come true. 2) The staff. Book people are almost always amazing, but Fox Tale's are at the top of the heap. They are so warm, so invested in their customers and community, they are the true definition of southern hospitality. I come from the north, but when I visit Fox Tale--with every single release, and this time it'll be virtual--I feel like I've come home.

First of all, choosing only one bookstore is pretty much impossible for me. It's located in an old house, and in addition to an excellent selection of books, it has so many great bookish accessories and items for sale. Enough can’t be said about my favorite neighborhood bookstore {Pages} in downtown Manhattan Beach. What a treat to have a local bookstore with a wonderfully-curated selection of books, author events and book signings with traditionally published and indie authors, book club discussions, and weekly story times. The owners are three local residents not only passionate about books, but about our little beachside city. To that end, they are active participants and supporters of community events from our annual Hometown Fair to local school book fairs. The fact {Pages} is down the street from my favorite bakery is a side benefit that I fully embrace. {Pages} has also been incredibly supportive of my publishing journey, allowing me to host book launch events for family and friends within their beautiful space. If you find yourself in the Manhattan Beach (outside of Los Angeles) area, be sure to give {Pages} a visit.

My favourite bookstore is Berkelouw’s in Paddington, in Sydney. It is located next door to my favourite cinema, so it’s an ideal place to drop in before or after the movie, and have coffee in their inviting little café upstairs.

It has the feel of an old-fashioned bookshop and it’s a pleasure to browse undisturbed among the timber shelves, tables, and bookcases, upstairs and downstairs. The staff are happy to recommend books, but they’re not intrusive, and the selection of books on every conceivable topic, classics as well as new releases, makes it an ideal place to while away an hour or two.

This is my favorite bookstore to get lost in. With hundreds of thousands of books stacked all around you, it's slightly overwhelming but also is the best place to escape to. The staff members are super helpful and I guarantee you'll leave with a book you'll love.
